What was pre-atlantic slave trade?
The existence of slavery in Africa for many centuries, before the trans-atlantic slave trade was formed.
- was often used as a form of punishment
- during famine family members would be sold into slavery
- larger kingdoms/chiefdoms commonly attacked smaller ones to capture slaves, who would be sold at profit to Arab slavers.
What was trans-atlantic slave trade?
The trade of slaves. It consisted of three journeys:
Britain -> Africa (carrying manufactured goods)
Africa -> the Americas/Caribbean (carrying slaves)
Americas/Caribbean -> Britain (carrying sugar/tobacco/rum/rice/cotton and other goods).
The route across the Atlantic ocean from Africa was called the Middle Passage.
