What was the renaissance?

A

It was a time period in Europe that transformed the way people thought about the world and themselves. People began to question medieval ideas (that were largely influenced by the church) in favour of art and science.
It began in Italy in about 1450 and spreading to the rest of Europe by the 16th century,
Changes were felt in literature, philosophy, art architecture, politics, science, religion, music, and other areas of learning.

The subject matter of the painting and sculptures were still religious, but artist begin to reveal the beauty of the human form.
Renaissance pictures and paintings, unlike those produced during the middle ages, lifelike and they used perspectives to show real space and distance.

Compare the literature of the Middle Ages to that of the renaissance.

A

Literature of the Middle Ages:
Most books were written in Latin and Greek.
Topics were religious.
Books were written by hand and were rare and expensive.

Renaissance literature:
Books started to be written in Italian, French, english. Making them more accessible
Topics chosen by writers concerned human life. Poets wrote 14 line poems called sonnets that celebrated love and beauty.
The Invention of the printing press meant that books were cheaper and more available

● During the middle ages, the church taught that all knowledge was to be found in the Bible and apposed scientific experiments.
● The renaissance brought about a new spirit of inquiry, and people were curious about the world around them.
