What did Britain do when they arrived in America?
They colonized the east coast of America forming the 13 colonies
What problems did Britain cause for the indigenous people of America?
They brought diseases like Smallpox and flu which killed a lot of the indigenous people
What was grown in Plantations?
Cash crops:
-Tobacco
-Rice
-Sugarcane
-Cotton
Where were most of the slaves in the United States?
Most of them were by the southern coastal states like:
-Georgia
-South Carolina
-North Carolina
-Virginia
How were slaves captured and Transported from West Africa?
-Africans were kidnapped by other Africans and were taken to the coastal bases in Africa set up by Europeans and were traded for whiskey, guns, cloth, and metal goods
Slaves captured by Europeans themselves were kept in barracoons until sold.
What were spirituals?
Slave songs made to express their feelings and were a combination of Christian hymns and African music that had:
-Dancing
- Clapping
-Foot tapping
In terms of the underground railroad, what were the stations?
Stations were people’s homes, churches, and shops where people would eat and rest
What was the conductor’s role in the underground railroad?
The conductor’s job was to move people safely from station to station
When did the fugitives move via the underground railroad?
At night
How and how far would fugitives move in the underground railroad?
They would be on foot or on false bottom wagons and would move 16-32 km a night.
What negative impacts did slavery have on West Africa?
-A large number of Africans were taken across the Atlantic (12 million)
-Slavery caused great human suffering in Africa
-Societies were disrupted which had a negative impact on the economic development of West Africa which caused a social imbalance
-Large parts of Africa lost their youth which meant they didn’t have enough strong and healthy people to farm.
