On the job training
A form of training that takes place in the normal work situation and many consist of a mental guiding a new staff member, or maybe more formalised into specific training sessions at the workplace. it enables employees to interact and become familiar with the equipment, machinery or process in the workplace, which are related to their role.
Methods of on the job training
- Coaching – mentoring that is provided by a supervisor or work colleague on a one-to-one basis and is ongoing
- Demonstration/instruction – is where the employee is shown how to perform the task by manager or work colleague
- Under study assignment – which is where the understudy observes another employee in their job. They were able to ask questions and learn from the experience to member well they are performing in their role
- Job rotation – within all between departments to provide broader experience and greater familiarity with the entire business and its operations
Advantages and disadvantages of on the job training
Advantages
• Cost-effective way to train as you are not paying for an external outside course provider
• Employee is being trained on specific roles or equipment they will be using in their role
• Training is tailored to meet specific needs of the business
• Employee is working whilst learning is therefore being productive
Disadvantages
• Training may be substandard if mental/coach is not trained in how to act in this role
• Mental may try to cram too much information into one training session
• Mental may pass on bad habits to the trainees
• Training may not be adequately planned
Off the job training
Off the job training requires the employees to attend a course or training session at another venue. Face type of training will normally be conducted by experience trainers. After the training, the employee comes back to work and can utilise the skills they have developed.

- Information presentation style – lectures are held for a large number of attendees with little opportunity for interaction. Material was presented in written and visual format
- Simulations – visual games and case studies are used to model real life situations
- Role-play
- Attaining specific qualifications from TAFE, university or other higher education course, that are funded by business
Advantages and disadvantages of off the job training
Advantages
• Learning from specialists and experts
• Provides opportunity for networking and information sharing with employees from other businesses or peer groups with similar requirements
• Receiving training from professionals can enable employees to the format roles to a high quality.
Disadvantages
• More expensive if paying course fees, transport and possibly accommodation
• Lost working time and potential output from employees while on training course
• Employees with these new skills/qualifications may leave the business to gain employment elsewhere.
