Q

Facepiece

A

That portion of the respirator that covers the nose, mouth and chin in a half-mask facepiece or covers the whole face in a full facepiece. Designed to make a gas-tight or particle-tight fit with the face and includes the headbands, exhalation valves(s) and connections for an air-purifying device or respirable gas source, or both.

15
Q

MMR

A

Mask Mounted Regulator. The second stage regulator that connects to the facepiece.

16
Q

NIOSH

A

National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health

17
Q

Overhaul

A

The act of performing a thorough search for and extinguishment of fire that may exist within the structure or area of operations.

18
Q

Oxygen Deficient Atmosphere

A

An atmosphere in which the oxygen concentration is less than that required to sustain unimpaired physical and mental activities (less than 19.5 percent oxygen by volume or has a partial pressure of 148 millimeters of mercury or less).

19
Q

Particulate Matter

A

A suspension of fine solid or liquid particles in air, such as dust, fog, fume, mist, smoke or spray.

20
Q

Personal Alert Safety System - PASS

A

A device that provides life-safety protection by emitting a loud shriek if the FF should collapse or remain motionless for approximately 30 seconds.

21
Q

Post Fire Operations

A

All operations occurring at the scene of a fire after extinguishment, including but not limited to salvage, overhaul, investigations, and fire watch.

22
Q

Quick-Fill

A

A system consisting of connections and hose that allows the transfer of air from one FF’s SCBA bottle to another FF’s SCBA bottle. This includes the ability to transfill, to extend the users air supply, to fill in a remote locate (i.e. high-rise and to quick-fill at the air unit).

23
Q

Ready Position

A

An intermediate donning stage in which a FF is wearing full protective clothing, including the SCBA backpack and facepiece with hood, gloves, and helmet in place. However, the MMR is not yet connected and work in contaminated atmospheres is not allowed.

24
Q

RIT Hose

A

A 10’ long section of high pressure hose with the threaded MSA bottle connection on one end and a quick fill connection on the other.

25
Q

RIT Kit

A

An orange bag consisting of the RIT hose, spare MSA air cylinder, spare MSA face piece, and a rope bag. Currently the Department has three RIT Kits: one unit on each Ladder and one unit carried on Battalion 1.

26
Q

Supplied Air Breathing Apparatus - SABA

A

A breathing air system that provides continuous air to rescue personnel operating in areas where conventional SCBA is not appropriate (i.e. confined space). Also known as Supplied Air Respirator (SAR).

27
Q

Self Contained Breathing Apparatus - SCBA

A

An apparatus that protects the face and lungs from toxic smoke and products of combustion.

28
Q

Skip Breathing

A

A Breathing technique that can extend the air-time of a cylinder.

29
Q

Standby Position

A

An intermediate donning stage in which a FF is wearing full protective clothing, including the SCBA backpack with the bottle open and PASS device activated, and the facepiece is stowed in the chest bag or hanging by the neck-strap.

30
Q

Stow

A

The act of returning the breathing apparatus to service and storing on the apparatus or other storage area.

31
Q

Transfill

A

The act of using the Quick-Fill hose and connections to transfer air from one FF to another.

33
Q

Purpose of Article 1

A

It is intended to provide fundamental info regarding the use of breathing apparatus, manufacturer’s recommendations, terminology essential to the user & fundamental maintenance procedures. Detailed language regarding policies and procedures is contained in those references.
