Training Manual Flashcards
In high rise fires, safe refuge can be found on what floor?
If a fire is located near the top of a high-rise building, safe refuge areas can usually be established in any location at least three floors below the fire floor
or on the roof
What are the search markings identify?
Half an (/) for actively searching the room X for search complete with the door closed Circle the X for secondary search complete
And arrows on the wall for path of egress
Structures to which horizontal ventilation are normally applied include?
Dwelling with no attic involvement
• Building which have windows high on the walls
• Attics of buildings with large vent openings
• Floors of a multi-story building
There are 5 safety procedures that should be considered absolutes when attempting to ventilate over a fire.
Always ladder the strong areas of the building away from potential structural problems such
as windows, large doors, etc.
2. Always have 2 means of escape from the roof. Emergency repelling is not considered one of
them. Have 2 ladders in place.
3. Ladder the building and approach the fire involved area from the uninvolved area. Utilize the
wind to your advantage if possible.
4. Always work in teams of at least 2 firefighters. It is inviting tragedy to attempt to ventilate with
one person.
5. While ventilating, work from the weak area toward the strong area. This will take the firefighter
back toward the means of escape if it was planned properly.
: There are four types of lightweight construction
panelized, metal gusset, open web, and wood “I” beams.
What are the Rules to Safe Extrication?
- Size-Up, Read the Wreck
- Stabilize the Vehicle/ Control the Battery
- Cut the Seatbelt Early
- Pry and Peek Before You Cut
- Follow the 5”-10” and 20” Rule
- Treat All Systems as Active
A confined space is defined as an area that:
Is large enough for an employee to bodily enter and perform work.
• Has limited or restricted means of entry or exit.
• Is not designed for continuous human occupancy

Contains, or has a known potential to contain, a hazardous atmosphere.
• Contains material with the potential for Engulfment.
• Has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly
converging walls, or a floor, which slopes and tapers to a smaller cross-section.
• Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard.

3 types of soil
COMPACT:
• Soil that appears compact or even hard and thus stable
SATURATED:
• Soil from which you can see water seeping
RUNNING:
• Loose, freely flowing soil
The 22/36 Speed shores are capable of shoring
trenches?
These speed shores can be used for trench
depths between 6 feet and 8 feet and trench widths
between 22inches and 36 inches.
r. They are
placed on either side of the victim(s) with a maximum
horizontal span of 4 feet from one another
WHAT IS SWIFTWATER?
Swiftwater is defined as water that is moving in a river, stream, naturally or concrete– lined flood
control channel or waterway, etc. at 1.5 mph or faster
Rivers share three common characteristics
relentless, powerful, and predictable
What is laminar flow?
Friction caused by the
water moving through the riverbed cause the
river flow to separate into layers that are moving at various speeds.
