What is the purpose of train preparation?
To ensure the train is fit to enter service through a systematic and thorough check.

Why might it be advisable to carry the operating manual?
To help diagnose problems if they occur.
What should be checked for external train equipment?
Presence of NTBM boards, wheel scotches, connections to the train, isolation cocks, doors, bodywork, indicator lights, external equipment, bogies, lights, fuel, water & oil status, chemical emissions tank status, sand box status, and fire systems for the engine.
What are the requirements for isolation cocks during external checks?
Isolation cocks (Brakes, Engines & Batteries) must be in correct positions and not damaged.
What should the condition of doors be during external checks?
Doors should be in good visible order.
What should be checked on the bodywork and windows?
Bodywork and windows should be in good order.
What should be verified about the bodyside indicator lights?
Bodyside indicator lights, door release, and out of use indicator lights should be visible and operating correctly.
What external equipment should be checked?
Couplers, air reservoirs & drain cocks, pipes, hoses, equipment hatches, and covers should be secure and in good visible order.
What should be checked regarding bogies and associated equipment?
Bogies, wheels, axle boxes, brakes, and associated equipment should be in good order with no obvious defects.
What should be checked about the lights on the train?
Head, Tail & Marker lights, and destination blinds should be visible, clean, and operating correctly.
What should be checked regarding fuel, water, and oil status?
There should be no leaks (Fuel, Water, Oil or Air) and relevant battery switches should be set to ‘on’.
What should be checked for the chemical emissions tank?
The chemical emissions tank status should show no leaks.
What should be checked regarding the sand box?
The sand box status should be verified.
What should be checked regarding fire systems?
Fire systems for the engine should be checked.
What should be checked for internal train equipment?
Presence and security of internal emergency equipment, cleanliness of the train interior, water and oil levels, lighting, heating, internal doors, and operability of toilets.
What should be checked regarding internal emergency equipment?
Presence and security of internal emergency equipment, cabinets & sign.
What should be checked regarding the cleanliness of the train?
The condition of the train interior and engine loco room should be clean.
