English people who wanted the Bible to be English - however, there was no printing press and few could read. They were later suppressed and driven underground
Explain the Rood Screen. Where in the church was it?
At the base, the lower panels were painted with images of relevant saints. The top of the rood screen was the rood (crucifix), flanked by Mary and St. John. It was between the nave, where the congregation sat, and the altar.
Why were the saints at the base of the rood screen?
They were “supporting” the cross, and they were beneath the level of God
What painting was often behind the cross?
“Doom” - a painting of the Last Judgment
