What is Qi? (3 things)
Life force energy
- Central life force
- Qi balance is vital to health
- Qi travels through the body in meridians
What are acupoints?
Points near the body surface along the meridians where Qi enters and leaves
How long do the needles normally stay in place?
10 seconds to 30 min
How often would an acute injury require acupuncture?
Only onces
How often would chronic conditions require acupuncture?
1-3 treatments before improvement
Once peak effect is reached how often is acupuncture needed?
2-3 times per year
When would you not do acupuncture? (5)
- Pregnant
- Recently exercised animals
- Recently bred animals
- Animals w/ high fever or infectious disease?
- Wait until after 3-4 hours after feeding
What are some side effects of acupuncture? (7)
- Muscle spasms
- Excessive licking or chewing
- Yawning
- Stretching
- Changes in breathing
- Leg stretching
- Pet maybe tender after treatment

What is electro acupuncture?
Needles are stimulate with electrical current and good for pain and paralysis
What is sonapuncture?
Ultrasound used to stimulate acupoints for 10-30 sec
What is aquapuncture?
Sterile liquid injected into a meridian point. Pressure from liquid stimulates points instead of needle, included Vitamin B12, saline, electrolite solutions
What is moxibustian?
Use of heat to stimulate acupoints
What is mugwort?
Warming herb that speeds up sluggish Qi
