Falling trade union membership in the UK
-Economic changes-The shift to a service based economy
-Legal changes-Various labor laws and reforms makes it harder for unions to recruit and maintain members
-Changing workforce demographic-There are more part time, temporary and gig economy jobs with less job security and benefits, making it challenging for unions to organize and retain members.
Some factors behind the rise of the gig economy
-Technological advancements has made it easier for workers to find gig work
-Cost reduction for employers as they can avoid costs associated with hiring full time employees e.g. benefits
-Desire for work life balance as it offers greater control over work schedules
-Entrepreneurial opportunities. Workers can become self employed and offer their services directly to clients or customers.
