Human development index Flashcards
Human development index
It is a measure that assesses average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and health life, knowledge and good SOL.
3 Dimensions of human development index
Health
Education
Standard of living
Health
HDI assesses health through life expectancy which is the average number of years a person is expected to live. Longer life expectancy indicates better health outcomes
Education
It is measured through 2 indicators:
-Mean years of schooling - average years of education received by adults 25 or older
-Expected years of schooling - The number of years a child is expected to complete at school.
These reflect access to and quality of education
Living standards
HDI uses gross national income (GNI) per capita adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP) to account for cost of living differences. A higher GNI shows a higher SOL.
Combining dimensions
3 dimensions are measured from 0-1 with 1 being the highest. The HDI combines the values by taking their geometric means. This ensures that no dimensions dominate the HDI; equal importance.
Advantages
-Holistic measure - considers 3 dimensions
-Simplicity - Easy to understand and calculate
- Allows for global comparison between countries and over time
