TRACE Flashcards
selenium food source
Can be found in high amounts in Brazil nuts. Can also be found in seafoods & organ meats.
selenium function
Selenium is an essential part of enzymes and proteins called selenoproteins which help to fabricate DNA and protect against cell damage and infection. These proteins are also involved in reproduction and the metabolism of thyroid hormones. Because of its role in DNA production and apoptosis (cell suicide) it could play a role in cancer prevention.
selenium def
A disease called cardiomyopathy can occur when a secondary stress is present, which is where the heart muscle itself is affected to where it loses its ability to pump blood effectively.
Can also lead to a certain type of osteoarthritis.
Associated with male infertility
