TRA/TPB Flashcards
History
Developed to better understand relationships between attitudes, intentions and behavior. Started out as TRA then later became TPB with addition of perceived control
Intention to perform the behavior is the most important determinant of behaviors . Constructs are concerned with individual motivating factors as determinants of a behavior
Value expectancy theory
Addition of perceived control
This was the extension that created theory of planned behavior, Was added to account for situational factors that might be beyond one’s control
TACT
Target- The desired consequence
Action- initiating or doing the behavior to get that consequence
ConText- where
Time- timeframe
Steps in applying TPB to inform behavioral change interventions
- specify behavior using TACT
- Conduct qualitative interviews with target population to find out beliefs
- Use findings to design a culturally appropriate survey instruments to measure construct
- Confirm measures explain behavioral intention
- Determine which construct best explains intention and will be used for intervention effort
- Design communication messages in materials to change specific believes that have the strongest explanation of intention and behavior
- Evaluate whether message is effective
