What were the Townshend Duties?
New duties. External taxes- so Parliament passed it through believing that it would be accepted.
What were the Townshend Duties on?
Glass, wine, china, lead, paint, paper, tea.
What was the money raised intended for?
To pay for the salaries of governors and judges, so they were not dependent on the colonies.
What did the Townshend Duties introduce and what were they?
The American Board of Customs Commissioners. Based in Boston, directly responsible to Britain.
They were tax collectors, would give American custom officials more powers.
Why did the Townshend Duties anger the colonists?
Now being taxed again, but still without representation. Concerns Britain are being tyrants- previously policy had been salutary neglect, but there was now more British presence.
What caused the New York Restraining Act?
Quartering Act enforced by Townshend- required colonial assemblies to house and supply British troops.
New York refused- because most of the burden fell upon them as NY was British army hq.
What was the NY Restraining Act?
Meant NY could not take any legislative action until they agreed with the Quartering Act.
Why did the NYRA anger colonists?
. Showed that the British could suspend NY’s legislative power- they were believed to be autocratic.
. Colonists unhappy with increased British presence.
. Concerned over property rights- British using it as their own.
