What was the Declaratory Act?
Asserted that the colonies were subordinate to the crown, and said that Parliament had the full authority to make laws for the colonies.
What happened in the aftermath of the Act’s repeal?
. Non-importation was abandoned.
. The Sons of Liberty virtually disbanded.
. Assemblies sent addresses of gratitude to the King.
What issues did the Stamp Act raise?
Parliamentary sovereignty over the colonies. Demanding independence essentially meant demanding self rule.
What shifts in power did it lead to?
Factions who could be charged over supporting the stamp act lost control of the assemblies.
Give an example of the shifts in power.
Massachusetts- the Otis faction discredited Governor Bernard and Thomas Hutchinson for supporting the British policy. Led to in 1766, Bernard’s supporters taking a dramatic loss at the polls.
What did British politicians believe after the stamp act?
Believed that they must reassert authority over the colonies or else they’d become independent by default.
