October, by Grenvilles ministry.
What was the Proclamation?
British gov declared that colonists settlement was to be a line by the Appalachians.
Land West of this line was not to be counted.
Colonists who had settled West of this were to come back.
Temporary line to appease the NA and to halt the fighting.
What tensions did the Proclamation Line cause?
Angered many colonists- especially those in Virginia, who had claims to western land. They had fought the French to gain this land and now they were denied the right to it.
Also angered many frontiersmen and land speculators.
How serious was the Proclamation Line?
Did not spark serious discontent.
Very difficult for the British to enforce.
How many American settlers ignored this?
30,000.
Moved West in the five years after 1763 in search of new lands.
When was the Proclamation Line accepted as a failure?
By 1768, Britain had accepted the breakdown of the Proclamation Line.
