A

Honeypot - scenic beauty from a natural formation; Halong Bay, Vietnam
Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Events (MICE) - convenient places to meet at due to location in travel routes, able to host large scale events; Suntec Convention Centre
Medical - people want to avoid high treatment costs/get higher quality treatment and better facilities, travel to a country with a good reputation; Singapore, South Korea
Theme park - amusement park settings or have a central theme, can cater to all ages; Disneyland
Heritage - people want to experience different cultures and understand the culture and history of that place better; Great Wall of China
Film-induced - people want to understand how the places inspired movies; Slums of Mumbai, India (Slumdog Millionaire)
Pilgrimage - people travel to take part in a religious activity which is important to the person’s beliefs and faith
Dark - people want to find out more about a historical event or were friends & relatives of those affected; Cu Chi Tunnel, My Lai Massacre Memorial

How does the government affect tourism?

A

The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) develops tourism as an industry by allowing tourism-related businesses to invest in Singapore, such as hotels, resorts and airlines.

[-] The government can close down the country and restrict access to certain areas, discouraging travellers.

A

The Smart Local provides travel guides and recommendations for tourists arriving in Singapore & domestic tourists.

[+] Good reviews about a place’s facilities and infrastructure can increase tourist flow to a place.

How do international organisations affect tourism?

A

[+] UNESCO heritage sites across the world bring culturally important places to attention, such as SG’s Botanical Gardens.

  • there is more awareness about these places, making people more interested in finding out more

[-] WHO provided situation updates and health advisories for avian influenza from 2003-2013

  • health advisories discourage people from travelling to a place for their own safety to decrease risk of being sick, decreasing tourist flow there.
