Where is Blackpool?
Blackpool is a borough seaside town located in Lancashire in the North West of Britain.
Why was Blackpool so popular in the 1800’s/1900’s?
It was so popular because everyone now had more holidays and the attractions featured at Blackpool were very popular to them.

- the Pleasure Beach theme park

What are 4 reasons why there was a decline?
- the resort wasn’t exciting enough for visitors to return following years
- the British weather isn’t always the greatest, so therefore people prefer to go abroad
- the holidays abroad are much cheaper than in the UK
- there was an increase in litter and graffiti making the resort look unattractive
What were/are the social/economic effects of the decline?
- 1000 hotels ceased their trade
- 300 holiday flat premises closed
- the average hotel occupancy rates fell as low as 25%
- unemployment rates rising
What are two positive effects that has come from tourism?
- there has been an increase in jobs for the local people
- there has been an improvement in Blackpool’s reputation
What strategies are being used to help Blackpool with the decline?
- Blackpool’s illuminations
- the introduction of ballroom dancing at the Blackpool tower
What happened with the Super Casino?
Blackpool did appeal as one of its strategies fr the Super Casino which could have helped to increase tourism, but unfortunately in the end, Manchester won the appeal.
Do I think the strategies have worked?
In my opinion I think that the strategies are working, but as the figures show (58% were day trippers with only 42% stayed for one night or more) more attractions need to be introduced to the resort and the resort also needs to be more accessible for visitors to get to.
