A National Park is an are of beautiful relatively wild countryside or ecosystem where plant and animal species, geomorphological sites and habitats are special, scientific, educative and recreative interest.
What are the 2 aims of a National Park?
- to preserve and enhance an area’s natural beauty.
- to promote people’s enjoyment of the countryside.
Where is the Lake District?
The Lake District National Park is in the North-east of England in a place called Cumbria.
How many visitors does the Lake District get a year?
The Lake District gets 15 million visitors a year.
What are 3 things that attracts tourists to the Lake District?
- tourists come to enjoy the scenery such as large lakes like Windemore and mountains like Scafell Park.
- tourists come to enjoy the many activities available such as birsd watching, walks, sailing, boat, rock-climbing and pony-trekking.
- tourists also come to enjoy the cultral attractions such as the Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth museum.
What do council members think of the Lake District?
The council members like the tourism because it brings in money for the local area wich is an economic advantage for the National Park.
What do environmentalists think of the Lake District?
Environmentalists/park rangers won’t like the fact that tourists might possibly drop litter causing the area to look messy and not up to its usual standards. This is an environmental disadvantage because it is damging the environment.
What do the locals think of the Lake District?
The locals might not like the traffic that comes with the National park because it will cause conjestions and will make the area slowly become crowded. This is a social and environmental disadvantage becasuse traffic will affect people with conjections and also pollution from the car fumes will effect the environment.

- sorting out the problem with traffic by improving public transport in the area
- sorting out the problem with footpath erosion by encouraging visitors to use less vulnerable areas, changing the lines of popular routes and also improving the materials of the paths
- helping to protect wildlife and farmland by adding in signs to remind visitors about taking litter home and also adding in bins
