Population Flashcards
Describe the world pattern?
The world population is going to continue to grow and it is estimated that in 2050, there will be over 9000 million people in the World. All of the continents including Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, North America and especially Asia will also increase. In 2050, i is estimated that Asia will have over 5000 million people where as Europe will decrease.
What was Thomas Malthus’ theory about population growth?
His theory was that human population tends to and will grow faster than the resources required to sustain it. Therefore there will be a crisis point when the population will exceed the resources to sustain it.
What are the 3 preventative checks needed to limit population?
- birth control
- moral restraint
- vice
What are the 4 positive checks needed to limit population?
- famine
- misery
- plague
- war
What was Boserup’s theory about population growth?
She believed that as population increases, more pressure is placed on the existing agricultural system which therefore stimulates invention. This change in technology which allows room for improved crop strains and increased yield means that population won’t exceed resources.
What was the Club of Rome’s theory about population growth?
They predicted that the inevitable collapse of civilisation will happen unless economic growth was to be halted. They also predicted that the world population would hit 7 billion and this would cause the world to begin to run out of far land.
What does the DTM model show about the total population (line)?
The total population line increases.
What does the DTM model show about the death rate (line)?
The death rate starts off high, decreases and then starts to flatten out.
What does the DTM model show about the birth rate (line)?
The birth rate starts off high then decreases dramatically.
What are the 5 stages of the DTM model?
high stationary, early expanding, less expanding, low stationary, decline
What is the high stationary stage of the DTM model?
- high birth rate
- high death rate
- stable or slow increase in natural increase
- many children needed for farming
- social/religious encouragement, no family planning
- disease and famine
What is the early expanding stage of the DTM model?
- high birth rate
- death rate is falling
- very rapid increase in natural increase
- many children die at an early age
- religious/social encouragement
- improvements in medical care and water supply
What is the less expanding stage of the DTM model?
- birth rate is falling
- death rate is falling
- natural increase increase slows down
- improved medical care and diet
- improvements in care and sanitation
What is the low stationary stage of the DTM model?
- low birth rate
- low death rate
- stable or slow natural increase
- family planning, good health
- good health care
- reliable food supply
What is the declining stage of the DTM model?
- very low birth rate
- low death rate
- slow decrease in natural increase
- family planning, good health
- improving status of women
- good health care
