What are the advantages of tourism?
Natural environment and weather attracts tourists.
Income from tourism often greater than income from raw materials and primary industry.
Employment for local people.
Encourages local producers of souvenirs and food.
Investment in infrastructure: better standard of living.
Profits can provide education and healthcare.
Increases cultural and political links.
What are the disadvantages of tourism?
Hotels etc ruin scenery.
Land is sold to developers.
Stress on water and land.
Tourists disturb the nature.
Litter, noise and water pollution.
Damage to local environment.
Big resorts owned by other countries and companies take earnings out of the country.
People lose their houses: properties too expensive.
Traditions and cultures can be destroyed in extreme cases. Eg. Majorca.
What is eco-tourism? Give an example.
Tourism which is sustainable to the country.
It only allows a few people in at a time, and the people can choose to stay with local communities to learn about their culture. They often enjoy visiting national parks and unspoilt natural attractions.
To go to the area, you choose travel companies which ensure that the places visited are protected and carefully managed in a sustainable way.
Low-carbon transport used (reduces carbon emissions).
Money is used for conservation of species.
Locals work, earning the money for themselves instead of large resorts.
People have similar interests (usually nature).
Environmentally friendly.
Sustainable.
Aim is to protect nature and local culture and traditions, and to teach people.
Increases local economy.
Creates jobs for locals in an area, helping contribute to the local economy.
Ensures that area will still be there and preserved for future generations to enjoy (sustainable tourism).
Makes people visiting more curious and open-minded.
This teaches eco-tourists the importance and beauty of nature and culture, and how to protect it, which results in less pollution due to tourism in the area.
However, can unintentionally create ‘honeypot’ sites (sites which attract tourists) which may not be as eco-friendly as intended.
Eg. In Sarawak, Malaysia.
