1) people have more disposable income
2) companies give more paid holidays now
3) travel has become cheaper
4) holiday providers now use the internet to sell their products to people directly which makes them cheaper.
why are some areas becoming more popular (3)
1) improvements in transport
2) countries in more unusual tourist destinations have got better at marketing themselves as tourist attractions
3) many countries have invested in infrastructure for tourism to make them more attractive.
why are cities popular?
culture (museums and art galleries), entertainment (bars, restaurants, theatres) and shopping
why are coasts popular?
the beaches and activities like swimming, snorkelling, fishing and water skiing.
why are mountains popular?
scenery and activities like walking, climbing, skiing and snow boarding
what 5 factors affect the number of tourists visiting the UK?
weather world economy exchange rate terrorism and conflict major events
what is the first step of the tourist area life cycle model?
exploration - small numbers of visitors are attracted to the area. there aren’t many tourist facilities
what is step two of the butler model?
involvement - local people start providing facilities for the tourists which attracts more visitors
what is step three of the butler model?
development - more and more visitors come as more facilities are built. control of tourism in the area passes from locals to big companies.
what is step four of the butler model?
consolidation- tourism is still a big part of the local economy, but tourist numbers are beginning to level off
what is step 5 of the butler model?
stagnation - visitor numbers have peaked. facilities are no longer as good and tourists have had a negative impact on the local environment, making the area less attractive to visit.
what are steps 6 in the butler model?
rejuvenation - if the area is rejuvenated then more visitors will come as they’re attracted by the new facilities.
decline - fewer visitors come as the area is less attractive. this leads to decline of the area as facilities shut or become run-down.
two positive economic impacts of mass tourism?
1) it brings money into the local economy.
2) it creates jobs for local people and increase the income of industries that supply tourism
one negative economic impacts of mass tourism
a lot of the profit made from tourism is kept by the large travel companies, rather than going to the local economy
three positive social impacts of mass tourism
1) lots of jobs mean young people are more likely to stay in the area.
2) improved roads, communications and infrastructure for tourism also benefit local people
3) income from tourism can be reinvested in local community projects.
