Touch Flashcards
What is the function somatosensory system
Provide info about touch and pain from the body
What are the 3 exteroceptions?
- Mechanoreception
- Thermoreception
- Nocireception
Where are somatic senses detected by?
The receptors from the endings of nerve fibres
Somatic nerve fibres are classified by:
- The axon diameters
- Their absense/presence of myelin
- The type of info they transmit
Sensory neuon: Aa
13-20 micrometers in diameter
80-120 m/s conduction
Proprioception in skeletal muscle
Sensory neuron Ab
6-12 micrometers in diameter
35-75 m/s conduction
Skin mechanoreceptors
Sensory neuron: Ad
1-5 micrometers in diameter
5-30 m/s conduction
Fast pain and cold temps
Sensory neuron: C
0.2-1.5 micrometers in diameter
0.5-2 m/s conduction
Dull pain, hot pain, itch
4 Cutaneous mechanoreceptors in the skin:
- Meissner’s corpuscles
- Merkel’s disks
- Pacinian corpuscles
- Hair follicle receptors (hair on skin)
Adaptive rate function
Determines if stimulus is changing and how fast it is doing so
Receptive field sites function
Identify where the stimulus is happening on your skin
What is Form Perception?
Identifying the form or shape of the object by touch
What is Texture perception?
Discriminate the smoothness and roughness of an object
What is Vibration perception?
Distinguishing fluttering and vibration of object on your skin.
