Common features neurodegenerative disease Flashcards
What do all neurodegenerative diseases appear to involve?
Involve a change in the shape of a normal protein within neurons. This results in a disease protein called “rogue” protein.
The process of acculumation of rogue proteins
1.Shape change in normal protein, resulting in rogue protein.
2. Rogue protein recriut and convert more the normal protein into the abnornal form, in a chain reaction.
What does the accumulation of rogue proteins do to organelles and cells?
Rogue proteins accumulate and stick to form insoluble aggregates in vulnerable neurons and glial cells.
This stuffs up the function of many organelles and kills the cell.
Where in the cell do problems appear in neurodegenerative diseases?
Mitochondria
