Pain Flashcards
Is pain discriminative or non-discriminative
non-discriminative
What do the experience of pain depend of?
- Sensory coding of stimuli
- Motivational/affective component and moments of high stress
- Cognitive/cultural component.
What receptors are responsible for pain and where do they originate
Nociceptors, they originate from the specialised ending of nerve fibres
Where is Noxious stimuli transduced? And what are they transduced into?
Transduced into electrical activity at the peripheral free nerve endings of Ad and C nerve fibres.
How are nociceptors classed?
- Temperature
- Mechanical stimuli
- Mechanical and thermal stimuli
- Mechanical, thermal and chemical stimuli
When do nociceptors respond?
When stimulus levels are outside the normal range
What excites the nocirecptor’s afferent?
Net entry of positive charge (Na+)
What ion channel is commonly involved with pain? At what temp is it activated?
TRPV1, activated above 43°
What can TRPV1 bind with?
Capsaicin (chilli pepper), allyl isothiocyanate (wasabi) and allicin (garlic)
True or false: Is there usually a fast sharp pain (Ad) followed by a slower dull pain (C)
True
What is Allodynia?
Innocuous stimuli are felt to be painful
What is primary hyperalgesia?
Pain stimuli that causes more intense pain
How is Allodynia and Primary Hyperalgesia shown
On damaged skin
