Total Internal Refraction Flashcards
What happens if the angle of incidence is equal to the critical angle?
There will be a lot of internal reflection, but some light will still be refracted
What happens if the angle of incidence is more than the critical angle?
No light comes out, complete internal reflection.
What is an endoscope?
A thin tube containing optic fibres to allow doctors to examine parts of the body.
Two bundles of optic fibres, one for light for target area. And one to carry image back.
What happens if the angle of incidence is less than the critical angle?
Most of the light passes out but there is some internal reflection
How does an optic fibre cable work?
> by bouncing waves off a thin inner core of glass or plastic
> the rays enter one end and are repeatedly reflected until they emerge at the other end.
> it works because the angle at which the light enters is more than the critical angle, so total internal reflection occurs .
What is the condition needed for total internal reflection?
The wave must travel through a dense medium to a less dense medium
How is a laser used as a cauteriser?
It is used with an endoscope to cauterise damaged blood vessels
