Topic One - Definitions Flashcards
Definition: polymer
Many monomers joined together
What are isomers?
[things] with the same general formula but different structures
What is an saturated fatty acid?
A fatty acid with no double bonds between carbons in the R group
Definition: mono-unsaturated
1 double bond between carbon atoms
Definition: Enzyme
A protein that acts as a catalyst to break up substrates without the use of E or being used up, by lowering activation energy
Definition: Induced fit
Enzyme is flexible and can mold itself around the substrate.
Stretch puts a strain on the substrate = distorts bonds = lower activation energy
Definition: primary structure
Many amino acids joined together by peptide bonds to form an amino acid chain
Definition: Secondary Structure
Amino acid chain twisted into a helix or sheet
Definition: tertiary structure
The overall specific 3D shape, determined by reactions between R groups
Definition: Quaternary structure
2+ polypeptides bonded together to form a structure.
Many include a prosthetic group
Definition: DNA polymerase
Pairs complementary bases
Definition: DNA helicase
Breaks down bonds between complementary bases
