topic 9 - ecosystems (biodiversity and humans) Flashcards
fish farming
growing fish in a contained area, usually to supply humans with food
indigenous/native
organisms that have been introduced to an area
non-indigenous
organisms that have been introduced to an area where they haven’t been before
overfishing
taking more fish from a population than are replaced by the fish reproducing so that the population number falls each year
how do non-indigenous species reduce biodiversity
they compete with indigenous species for resources like food and shelter. sometimes they are better at getting these resources and out-compete the indigenous species, decreasing the number of them and die out.
what do non-indigenous species sometimes bring to habitats
new diseases, they can often infect and kill lots of indigenous species, reducing the species biodiversity
