Topic 9 ( Cables ) Flashcards
A cable designed to handle pulling forces (tension) without resisting bending or compressive stresses.
Flexible Cable
A cable that supports its own weight evenly across its length. Its tension depends only on its weight and curve shape.
Catenary Cable
A cable that supports horizontal loads (like bridges), where the load is much heavier than the cable’s weight.
Parabolic Cable
A cable that holds concentrated (focused) vertical loads and is analyzed similarly to truss structures.
Segmented Cable
The pulling force within a cable, keeping it tight and able to carry loads.
Tension
The vertical distance a cable dips under its weight or load, measured from the lowest point to the supports.
Sag
The force or weight the cable carries, such as the weight of a bridge deck or electrical wires.
Load
A load spread evenly over a cable’s length, typical for parabolic and catenary cables.
Distributed Load
A single, heavy load applied at a specific point on the cable, common in segmented cables.
Concentrated Load
