Topic 9 - Atmosphere Chemistry Flashcards
What gases did volcanoes release?
CO2, Nitrogen, Water vapor, small amounts of methane and ammonia
How were oceans made?
Condensed water vapor
How was seabed sediment made?
CO2 dissolved in oceans and made precipitates
How was oxygen made?
Algae and green plants photosynthesising
What is the role of greenhouse gases?
Insulate the world
How is carbon monoxide formed?
Incomplete combustion
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous?
Replaces oxygen in haemoglobin
Contributes to global dimming
What are particulates?
Solid partes of soot and unburnt fuel
Why are particulates dangerous?
Inhale = respiratory problema and global dimming
Why is sulfer in the atmosphere dangerous?
It oxidises into sulferdioxide and causes respiratory problems
Why is nitrogen dangerous?
Forms nitrogen oxide and causes respiratory problems
Why is nitrogenoxide and sulfer dioxide dangerous?
They mix w/ clouds and form acid rain
