Topic 8Chemical Analaysis Flashcards
What is a pure substance in chemistry?
A substance made up of only one type of element or compound.
How can you test for purity?
By checking the melting and boiling points; pure substances have specific melting/boiling points.
What is a formulation?
A mixture designed as a useful product, with exact quantities of components.
Give an example of a formulation.
Paint, fuels, cleaning agents, alloys.
What is chromatography used for?
To separate and identify substances in a mixture.
What does the Rf value represent in chromatography
The ratio of the distance moved by a substance to the distance moved by the solvent.
How do you calculate the Rf value?
Rf = distance moved by substance / distance moved by solvent.
What is the test for hydrogen gas?
lit splint produces a squeaky pop.
What is the test for oxygen gas?
A glowing splint relights.
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Limewater turns cloudy.
What is the test for chlorine gas?
Damp litmus paper turns white (is bleached).
How can you test for metal ions using flame tests?
Different metals produce characteristic flame colors when burned.
What color does lithium produce in a flame test?
Crimson
What color does sodium produce in a flame test?
Yellow.
What color does potassium produce in a flame test?
Lilac.
What color does calcium produce in a flame test?
Orange-red.
What color does copper produce in a flame test?
Green
What is the precipitation test for metal ions?
Adding sodium hydroxide to form colored precipitates.
What color precipitate does copper(II) produce with NaOH?
Blue
What color precipitate does iron(II) produce with NaOH?
Green
What color precipitate does iron(III) produce with NaOH?
Brown
What is the test for carbonates?
Add dilute acid; carbon dioxide gas is produced if a carbonate is present.
What is the test for sulfates?
Add barium chloride and hydrochloric acid; a white precipitate indicates a sulfate
test for halides?
Add nitric acid and silver nitrate; different halides give different colored precipitates.
