Topic 8a - two way species interactions - competition (antagonistic) Flashcards
Coexistence
the state of two or more species being found in the same place at the same time
Competitive exclusion principle
that two species with identical niches cannot coexist indefinitely
exploitative competition
use of a shared and limiting resource by two or more individuals.
“Ghost of Competition Past”
Used to describe one possible reason for observed differentiations in niches. Competing species may be less fit than a species which avoids competing because it occupies a fundamental niche which does not overlap theirs
interference competition
form of competition involving direct antagonistic interactions between individuals
inter-specific competition
competition between individuals of different species
intra-specific competition
competition between individuals of the same species
resource limitation
limitation of population growth by resource availability
resource partitioning
the division of resources to avoid interspecific competition for limited resources in an ecosystem
self thinning
reduction in population density as a stand of plants increase in bio mass, due to intraspecific competition
