Topic 4: Temperature Relationships Flashcards
Albedo
the proportion of incident radiation reflected by a surface
acclimation
physiological adjustment to change in an environmental factor, such as temperature or salinity
conduction
the movement of heat between objects in direct physical contact
convection
the process of heat flow or transfer to a moving fluid, such as wind or flowing water
ectotherm
an organism that relies mainly on external sources of energy for regulating body temperatures
endotherm
an organism that relies mainly on internal sources of energy for regulating body temperatures
environmental lapse rate
the rate at which the temperature changes with the altitude
hibernation
a dormant state, involving reduced metabolic energy, that occurs in some animals during the winter
homeotherm
an organism that uses metabolic energy to maintain a relatively constant body temperature; such organisms are often called warm blooded.
macroclimate
the prevailing climate for a region
metabolic heat
energy releases within an organism during the process of cellular respiration
metabolizable energy intake (MEI)
the net energy remaining after fecal and urinary energy loss
Microclimate
a small scale variation in climate caused by a distinctive substrate, location, or aspect
Migration
the movement of organisms from one place to another with intentions of settling, permanently or temporary
Poikilotherm
an organism whose body temperature varies directly with environmental temperatures; commonly called cold blooded
