  1. 3 major changes - singular to plurality, emphasis from beliefs to practices and religious self-arareness
  2. Common beliefs to all traditions: Bible=word of God. Divine Providence. Heaven and Hell. Salvation through Jesus Christ.
  3. Nature of disputed doctrines therefore is explosive. All need to be understood on their own terms simultaneously.

  • Expectations of Authorities in Early modern traditions mistaken
  • Unintended consequences: Reform turned to plurality. Doctrinal disagreement>Doctrinal pluralism>doctrinal relativism
  • Religious intolerance > secular political order
