Topic 8 endocrine system Flashcards
role of hormones
Chemical subtances secreted by endocrine system to maintain homeostasis
relationship between hypothalamus and pituitary
Hypothalamus receives feedback from the body regarding homeostasis
Hypothalamus regulates the pituitary gland to maintain homeostasis
Pituitary gland is located inferior to the hypothalamus for efficiency of regulation
Nerve impulses from the hypothalamus stimulate the pituitary gland
Which makes Pituitary releases hgh (human growth hormone)
how are circulating hormones regulated
Hormones are regulated through negative feedback loops. A stimulus elicits the release of a hormone. Once the hormone reaches a certain level, a signal is sent to stop the release of the hormone. A rise in blood glucose levels will trigger the release of insulin (pancreas). Once blood glucose levels decrease glucagon (pancreas) is released.
endocrine glands release hormones when stimulated by other organs
Characteristics of hormones (4)
- secreted by endocrine organe
- mostly travel in blood stream
-specific to target site - regulate body (homeostasis)
Circulating hormone
Travel around blood stream acting on distant target cells
local hormone
Are produced by nerve cells
actt on same type of cells they are produced by
act on neighbouring cells without entering blood stream
Function of adrenaline in excercise (4)
- Stilumate glycogenisi
- facilitate sympathetic nervouse system activity withing body
- Increase HR
- Increase vasodilation in muscles
