topic 7.8 sustainable development Flashcards
Sustainability
the use of Earth’s land and natural resources in ways that ensure they will continue to be available in the future
Natural resource depletion:
the more we industrialize the more resources we will demand, depleting them faster
Mass consumption:
as we continue to develop, we will get closer to “age of mass consumption” causing resource depletion and waste management issues
Pollution
mass consumption will lead to mass waste, and mass use of resources including carbon based resources
Climate change:
a lot of carbon emissions could create climate change problems
Loss of indigenous land
land that is still available to mine/extract resources is typically where indigenous populations live, so they could be displaced
Ecotourism
: a form of tourism based on the enjoyment of natural areas that minimizes the impact to the environment
Ecotourism
Purpose
to attract tourism which brings new money to a country
