topic 7.5 theories of development Flashcards
Rostow’s Stages of Economic Growth
(modernization model)
Traditional society
focused on surviving and doing unproductive work
Preconditions for takeoff:
focused on the building of INFRASTRUCTURE
Takeoff
a few key industries are really starting to grow
Drive to maturity:
diversifying the economy, still growing, but not as fast
High mass consumption:
CORE, focused on fun stuff and not necessities
Summarize the overall theory
every country can become more developed, you just have to follow in the footsteps that came before you
Limitations of this theory?
this is the path that current MDCs took, but today is different than in the past, so the path may not be the same. Also, if every country is MASS consumption, what will that do to our carrying capacity?
Identify some countries that would be considered CORE
NW Europe, North America, Japan
Identify some countries that would be considered SEMI-PERIPHERY:
Latin America, China, Four Asian Tigers
Identify some countries that would be considered PERIPHERY:
Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia
Summarize the overall theory.
: there will ALWAYS be more developed countries and there will ALWAYS be less developed countries, as long as we are dependent on each other the fact will remain
Limitations of this theory?
Pessimistic, doesn’t give tools to help countries improve their level of development, very focused on economic power
Dependency theory:
a theory that describes the development challenges and limitations faced by poorer countries and the political and economic relationships poorer countries have with richer countries
Commodity dependence:
an aspect of dependency theory that occurs when more than 60 percent of a country’s exports and economic health are tied to one or two resources
