What is the purpose of the framework?
- Set up what good prescribing looks like,
- Demonstrate the skills and characteristics, qualities and behaviours, needed for safe and effective prescribing,
- Also provides a generic framework for all prescribers
What do you need to consider, using the 10 RPS competencies, for safe and effective prescribing of a drug?
o Undertakes a full medical, social and medication history including allergies and intolerances.
o Undertakes a clinical assessment.
o Full understanding of the condition
o Understands the mode of action and pharmacokinetics of the medication and how these may be altered with age/development
o Takes into account any relevant patient factors: Compliance, experience of pain, understanding
o Ensures that the patient knows what to do if there are any concerns about the management of their condition if the condition deteriorates or if there is no improvement in a specific time frame.
o Prescribes within own scope of practice and recognises the limits of own knowledge and skill.
