Define oral health
the state of the mouth, teeth, and orofacial structures
What are the 4 most common oral diseases?
Tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancers
What conditions are linked to oral health?
cardiovascular diasease, stroke, endocarditis, pneumonia, pregnancy complications, diabetes, osteoporosis, HIV/ AIDS, alzheimer’s disease
What are signs of poor oral hygiene?
bleeding gums, tooth decay, chronic bad breath, loose teeth, gum recession, mouth sores, toothache, swelling of the jaw, gingivostomatitis
How can we improve oral hygiene?
brush teeth twice a day, floss once a day, brush your tongue, use antibacterial mouthwash, visit your dentist, avoid smoking and tobacco products
What does the basic examination kit contain?
Mirror, probe, periodontal probe, and tweezers
What is the function of the dental mirror?
allows extra light into the mouth so we can see the inside of the mouth clearly, and can be used to push/ get some organs or tissues out of the way (tongue and cheek)
What is the function of the dental probe?
basic examination of tooth surface, help identify tooth with calculus and decay, can help check for marginal failure and overhangs on restorations
What is the function of the periodental probe?
helps check the basic periodental state of the patient
What is the function of the tweezers?
used to pick up anything
