Topic 7 - Inheritance Flashcards
What is a genotype?
The complete set of alleles carried by an organism on its chromosomes.
What is a phenotype?
The observable characteristics of an organism, resulting from its genotype and environmental influences.
What does it mean by an organism being diploid?
They carry two alleles for each gene.
What is a dominant allele?
A single allele is enough to express the trait in the phenotype.
What is a recessive allele?
The trait is only expresses if there are two recessive alleles present.
What is a codominant allele?
Both alleles are expressed equally in the phenotype.
What is monohyrbid inheritance?
The inheritance of a single trait controlled by one gene with two alleles.
What is the expected ratio for monohybrid inheritance>
3:1
What is dihybrid inheritance?
Involve the inheritance of two characteristics controlled by two different genes located on separate chromosomes.
What is the expected ratio for dihybrid crosses?
9:3:3:1
