Topic 7 Halogens (group 7) Flashcards
1
Q
How can we explain the reactivity if halogens?
A
As you go down the atoms get bigger, it’s harder for them to gain an electron and become negative ions so they become less reactive
2
Q
Name 3 properties of Halogens
A
- don’t conduct electricity
- brittle and crumbly when solid
- poisonous and smelly
3
Q
what happens to the colours of the halogens as you go down the group?
A
They get darker
- fluorine - pale yellow
- chlorine - green yellow
- bromine - red brown
- iodine - blue black
4
Q
What are halides?
A
When halogens react with another substance they becoming negative ions, as they gain an electron
5
Q
What do halogens and metals react to form?
A
Ionic compounds
6
Q
What do halogens and non metals react to form?
A
Covalent compounds
7
Q
What group are the halogens?
A
group 7
