Topic 4 Strong And Weak Acids Flashcards
What happens when acids ionise/dissociate in solution
They split up producing a hydrogen ion and another ion
How are strong acids ionised
Strong acids are ionised almost completely meaning large proportions of hydrogen ions dissociate to release H+ ions
How are weak acids ionised
Weak acids aren’t fully ionised meaning small proportions of hydrogen ions are dissociated to release H+ ions
What does it mean when the ionisation of a weak acid is a reversible reaction
This means that equilibrium is set up and only a few acid particles release H+ ions meaning that the equilibrium lies to the left
What does acid strength tell you
What proportion of the acid molecules ionise in water
What does acid concentration tell you
Measures how much acid there is in a litre of water (how watered down the acid is)
What is an acid with a large number of molecules called
Concentrated
What is an acid with a small number of molecules called
Dilute
