Topic 4 Making Insoluble Salts Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 3 rules of solubility

A

1) how you make a salt depends on how soluble/insoluble it is
2) when 2 solutions are mixed salt is formed in precipitate
3) if it just forms in solution, it’s soluble

Q

What’s the method for making an insoluble salt

A

1) add lead nitrate to test tube, add water to dissolve it (deionised water)
2) shake to ensure leas nitrate is dissolved
3) in separate spatula do the same to the sodium chloride solution
4) tip both solutions in a beaker and stir
5) put filter paper into filter funnel (make sure there’s no gaps so solution doesn’t drip)
6) pour contents of beaker into filter paper
7) swill out beaker with more deionised water and tip into funnel
8) rinse contents of filter paper
9) scrape lead chloride onto fresh filter paper
