Topic 7 Flashcards
From grid to home
Electricity starts at a power generating station. The energy is then stepped up to 500kV in a transformer to send it long distances. It is then sent to a substation and stepped down to 60-138 kV. It travels to a distribution station, stepped down to 25kV, travel to a transformer and stepped down to 240/120V
Wires
Hot wire- black insulated wire used for ordinary appliances
Ground wire- either bare cooper or green insulated: reduces shock hazards by safely channelling and leaked current on metal components back into the ground
neutral wire-
