Topic 5 Flashcards
Electro-chemical cell
An electrochemical cell is a device capable of either generating electrical energy from chemical reactions or using electrical energy to cause chemical reactions
consists of electrodes and electrolytes
Electrodes
Two different metals
- one is negative(gives up electrons)
- one is positive ( receives electrons)
the passing of electrons creates an electrical current
wet cells vs dry cells
wet- liquid electrolyte
dry- paste, plastic or ceramic solid electrolyte
electrolyte
a substance that conducts electricity
Primary vs secondary cell
Primary-the amount of chemical it contains determines the energy the cell can produce
Secondary-the chemical reaction which produces the electricity can be reversed by
forcing electricity through the dead cell
-this restores the chemicals so that the cell can continue producing electricity
