Topic 6 - Radioactivity - Atom Flashcards
What is an atom?
A positively charged nucleus surrounded by negatively charged electrons
The nucleus is made of positive protons and neutral neutrons.
What are the components of the nucleus in an atom?
Protons and neutrons
Protons are positively charged, while neutrons are neutral.
What charge do electrons have?
Negatively charged
Electrons orbit the nucleus at different fixed distances.
How does the nuclear radius compare to the radius of the atom?
The nuclear radius is a lot smaller than the radius of the atom.
Where is most of the mass of the atom located?
In the nucleus.
What is a proton?
A subatomic particle with a relative mass of 1 and a relative charge of +1.
What is a neutron?
A subatomic particle with a relative mass of 1 and a relative charge of 0.
What is an electron?
A subatomic particle with a relative mass of 0.0005 and a relative charge of -1.
What is a positron?
A subatomic particle with a relative mass of 0.0005 and a relative charge of +1.
What is the approximate size of an atom?
About 0.1 nanometers (10^-10 meters).
