Topic 6- Group 0 Flashcards
Whats the name of this group
Noble gases
What does inert mean
doesn’t react
Why are the noble gases chemically inert compared with other elements
They have a stable electronic configuration and full outer shells therefore is difficult to gain, lose or share electrons
Explain how the uses of noble gases depends on their inertness, low density and/or non-flammability
Helium is used for balloons because it has a low density and is inflammable
Argon is used in light bulbs as they have an inert atmosphere for filament lamps, inflammable
Neon- Lights/colours- electricity passes through it.
Pattern in the physical properties of some noble gases and use this pattern to predict the physical properties of other noble gases
The noble gases all have low boilings points, this is typically a property of a non metal. The boiling points increase as you go down the group.
The particles in gases are spread far apart, so gases have low densities, helium at the top of the group has the lowest density. Densities increase as you go down the group
