Topic 5 Behaviour App To Treating Phobias Flashcards
PEEL 1
SD treatment
P- A strength is that SD is effective in treating a range of phobias.
E- E.G McGrath reported about 75% of phobias respond to SD.
E- Success appears to lie with actual contact with feared stimulus.
L- Meaning that in vivo techniques are better than those using pictures of feared stimulus.
PEEL 2
Faster & less effort
P- A strength of both therapies is they’re faster and require less patient effort than psychotherapies.
E- E.G psychological therapies require willpower.
E- Meaning behavioural therapies can be useful for children and people with learning difficulties.
L- SD can also be self-administered which makes it cheaper than therapist- guided therapy.
PEEL 3
Psychodynamic symptoms and cause
P- A strength of the psychodynamic approach is it notices removing the symptoms of a phobia doesn’t mean the cause is removed.
E- The symptoms can resurface in another form if the cause remains, this is called symptom substitution.
E- Freud believed the real cause of phobias is projected onto another object as the phobia can’t be expressed directly.
L- The psychodynamic approach emphasises the importance of treating the underlying cause rather than just removing the symptoms.
