Topic 2 - Definitions Cont Flashcards
PEEL 1
Johoda’s criteria
P- One limitation of the ideal mental health is that Johodas criteria are unrealistic.
E- Few people satisfy all the criteria all the time.
E- Therefore, everyone would be described as abnormal to a degree.
L- We should see how much of the criteria is absent before someone is judged as abnormal.
PEEL 2
Cultural differences
P- A limitation of both failure to function adequately and ideal mental health definition is that there’s cultural differences.
E- E.G both definitions are based on western cultures and beliefs.
E- Applying them to people of non western cultures isn’t appropriate.
L- Meaning both definitions are culture bound, so only apply to people of western cultures.
PEEL 3
Mental & physical health
P- Another limitation of the ideal mental health definition is it suggests mental health is the same as physical health.
E- Physical illnesses have physical causes, making them easier to diagnose.
E- Not all mental disorders have physical causes.
L- Meaning it’s less likely we can diagnose mental abnormality the same way we do with physical abnormality.
