Topic 5 Flashcards
What is density
Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance.
i.e The crowdedness of the particles
The size ,mass and arrangement of the atoms affects the density of a substance.
As you increase Temp the particles gain energy, taking up more space and decreasing the substances density.
How to measure Density
Density is measured by mass per unit volume
Density is the Mass divided by the Volume or D=m/V
Mass and Volume
Mass(g)- amount of matter in a substance; measured with a balance
Volume(cm3)- the amount of space occupied by a substance ; measured in litres or cubic units
Weight and Gravity
Weight- the force of Gravity exerted on Mass(N)
Gravity- the attractive forces between masses
Force a push or pull, or anything that causes a change in the motion of an object
How to calculate weight
Mass x 100
How to measure volume of irregular shape
Displacement. You have to submerge it fully in water and measure the volume of water that is spilt out of the container. That volume is exactly the same as the object.
